萬聖節的由來
西元前五世紀，愛爾蘭的喀爾特族Celtic人，將夏末訂在10月31日，同時在這天慶祝新年。傳說中，每年到了這一天，所有時空的法則都會失效，使得陰陽兩界合而為一，因此，這是遊魂出沒找替死鬼的唯一機會。
為了不讓這些遊魂得逞，村民在當天晚上，都會打扮成鬼魂，在村莊各地熱熱鬧鬧的遊行，希望嚇走那些孤魂野鬼。在這傳說中最悽慘的部分是，當村民認為某些人可能被鬼附身時，就會將他綁在木樁上活活燒死，目的是要"殺雞儆猴"，警告其它鬼魂離遠點。
隨著時間流逝，許多風俗習慣的傳統精神慢慢式微，到後來，裝扮成鬼怪或巫婆，變成只是一種儀式化的行為。1840年左右，愛爾蘭移民將萬聖節的傳統帶到美國，到了近代，萬聖節晚上，大家奇裝異服地上街狂歡，誰還擔心鬼魂附身的事。
至於夜裡，小孩子打扮成各種鬼怪，興高采烈地挨家挨戶去討糖果，在各家門口大喊"Trick-or-Treat！"，不給糖？那你就等著我們的惡作劇！這種"合法的勒索"，倒不是源自喀爾特族，有可能是從西元九世紀的歐洲風俗演變而來的。
在當時的習俗裡，每到11月2日的萬靈節(AllSoulsDay)，基督徒就會到各村莊去乞求"靈魂之餅"，這是一種方型的野莓餅。當遇到好心的人家施捨這種糕餅，基督徒就會為他死去的親人進行祈禱。當時人相信，即使是陌生人的禱告，也能幫助超度亡魂上天堂，因此一般人都不吝於施捨這種糕點。

而萬聖節雕刻南瓜的習俗，則可能和愛爾蘭的民間傳說有關。據說有一個名叫傑克的酒鬼，曾經設計將撒旦騙上樹，並在樹幹上刻了一個十字架，讓撒旦不敢下來，結果魔鬼和他達成協議，保證從此不再前來騷擾，才得以脫身。據說可憐的傑克在死後，天堂和地獄都拒絕他進入。魔鬼給了他一小塊灰燼，讓他在黑暗的地獄中比較能看清楚路，他便將這小塊灰燼放在一個打了許多洞的菜頭當中，好讓它燒久一點。
後來蘇格蘭人的小孩便模仿他,挖空大頭菜,放入蠟燭.愛爾蘭人則是用 馬鈴薯或是大頭菜; 英格蘭則用甜菜;後來他們移民到了美國發現一個更好用的燈籠--南瓜Pumpkin!從此以後你看到的萬聖節裝飾,就變成了南瓜囉!
有關萬聖節的另一說
萬聖節 (Halloween) 是在每年的十月三十一日，當天晚上打扮得「鬼」模「鬼」樣，愈嚇人愈好。小孩子則忙著挨家挨戶要糖果，而且不忘說句「 Trick or treat， 」 (給糖吃，不然就搗蛋 )。
